Solid Hardwood flooring

5 inch Quarter sawn Brazilian cherry with Walnut feature strip.

Solid hardwood flooring is cut out from a solid piece of wood.

When we think of a solid Hardwood floor we generally think of the standard strip oak Hardwood floor that is 3/4" thick by 2 1/4" wide, but solid Hardwood floors are also available in various sizes from 3 to 6 or more inches wide (called plank Hardwood floors).  Custom Milled sizes less than 2-1/4 or wider than 6 inches wide are also available and are available in different thicknesses.  The Hardwood flooring is generally in random lengths from 12" – 84", Custom Milled lengths can exceed 12’ long.  The most common Hardwood floor species used for solid wood floors are red oak, white oak, and maple, although they are available in many other Hardwood flooring species.

Solid Hardwood floors are sensitive to moisture and it is not recommended to install these floors below ground level, or directly over a concrete slab.  Solid Hardwood floors are for nail-down installations only, (with the exceptions of a few manufactures that state you can direct glue down 5/16 inch thick solid Hardwood flooring such as the Bruce Natural Reflections.)  You can refinish, or recoat solid Hardwood floors several times, which adds to their appeal and to their long life.  There are solid  Hardwood floors that are well over 100 years old and are still in good condition.

Q. What is the advantage of using a Solid Hardwood floor over the other types such as an engineered floating or glue down floors?

A. 3/4 Solid Hardwood flooring has a thick 5/16 top wear layer that can be sanded and refinished new again up to 7 times and can last well over 100 years.  Solid Hardwood flooring also adds structural strength to a floor system due to its 3/4 thickness and interlocking Tongue and Groove milling. If you have a wood sub floor you would most likely want to use a 3/4 solid Hardwood floor.

                                          Job-site Finished Hardwood Flooring

If you want a custom stained Hardwood floor, or a Hardwood floor to match existing trim, than a job-site finish is your answer. Job-site finish means you start with a bare (unfinished) Hardwood floor and than the floor is sanded, stained, and finished in the home.  The other advantage of a job-site finish is if you are concerned with uneven heights between planks, the sanding process will smooth out the floor. All joints, seams are filled and sealed un-like pre-finished installations That have beveled seams and butt joints.
